There are so many attractive designs available, and so much to learn about embroidery techniques. What do you want to be able to do with software ? (There’s other levels of software for professional embroiderers and digitisers.) you need top level software – if you also want to do digitising, to make your own designs rather than adapting designs made by other people (auto-digitising – give the software an image and it produces embroidery instructions, manual digitising – do it yourself from scratch). with mid-level software – you can extract parts of a design, even alter individual stitches, also do extra editing tasks such as split large designs for multiple hooping, or run a stitching simulator.Ĥ. using low level software – you can also add text and combine designs in real size, often with more text options than on the 500E, perhaps choose between constant stitch count or constant stitch density when changing size, or remove hidden stitches when combined designs overlap.ģ. You can also print a complete colour sequence chart – that information is on the 500E but not easy to see.Ģ. Designs are at real size or larger so you can see what you are doing, and print full size templates for design placement, or fabric cutting patterns for appliqué and in-hoop designs.

But free software can do some things which you can’t do on a 500E. You can do more design editing on the 500E than you can in free software. free software – can rotate/flip/re-size (probably with constant stitch count) but not usually add text. I think there are 4 levels of software for us hobbyists, though Bernina only has 3 levels : 1, 2, and 3-4.ġ.
